Sozi: Going Home
-
When I was little I was given a doll called Suzy. I called her Sozi and had to constantly remind my granny how to pronounce her name. (It rhymes with Ozzie.) Sozi came everywhere with me.
In 2001 I wrote and pencilled a picture book about Sozi's adventures as she is whisked up into the sky and plunged into the ocean – all the time searching for a new home.
Sozi falls in love with each new place she visits, but faces challenges everywhere. Weaving together her experiences, she conjures a new home – and continues her travels.
It mirrors my experience of living away from home, of world travels – and of yearning for comfort.
Now, I live in Berlin and, to be honest, I still don't know where home is. And of course, neither does Sozi.
All this time, the book has remained unfinished waiting for me to work out how this story ends.
So for now, Sozi continues her adventures and waits for me to catch up.
