A Voyage to the Valley
-
I love to research, and when I was aked to do "anything, absolutely anything" to promote Fortitude Valley (a district in Brisbane, Australia) it gave me a chance to do just that.
I looked into the history of the area from the first settlers through to it's emergence as Brisbane's most popular entertainment and shopping district and home to the city's Chinatown.
The resulting billboards, posters and postcards incorporated historical references and local landmarks – beginning with a scene depicting the voyage of the ship after which the area was named.
Diary Entry S.S. Fortitude: "Left London September 19, 1848...some are singing, others playing on different instruments and dancing... in company with several ships, wafted on by a good breeze...A whale of considerable size came close to our ship and spouted up the water".
Two to the valley: McWhirters Rooftop Christmas Show, 1958. A spectacular, free circus extravaganza – clowns, monkeys, trick dogs...all the fun of the fair!
You are here: The distinctive landmarks of the Valley streetscape - symbols of it's history and cultural diversity.
